“Heavy prolonged rainfall from Friday April 19 to date has caused significant localized flooding in Southern China, particularly in Guangdong Province where 27 cities and counties have broken their cumulative rainfall records for April. The flooding can be partly associated with the typical Meiyu-Baiu frontal system (“Plum Rains”) that tends to occur across China and far East at this time of year. Guangdong gets frequently hit by flood events both from tropical cyclones and from other weather systems and is one of the most densely populated regions of China. It ranks in the top 5 of Chinese provinces with respect to the flood loss that is expected in a year. Looking a little ahead into the season, the emergence of La Niña conditions is likely to promote increased rainfall across southeast Asia. So, we may see a flood rich period coming up. Moody’s RMS Inland Flood and Typhoon Models help understand, plan and mitigate the financial cost of those perils at high resolution.”
