Heavy rainfall between Monday May 15 and Wednesday May 17 led to widespread flash and river flooding across the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Floodwaters inundated dozens of towns and villages across over 100 municipalities in the Provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena, Bologna, and Rimini

The weather system that brought the severe weather and torrential rainfall to the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy was named Storm Minerva by the Operational Center for Meteorology (CNMCA)

The Emilia-Romagna region was severely affected by drought conditions in the preceding months that resulted in dried out soils and reduced permeability. The region was affected by heavy rain at the beginning of May that resulted in isolated flash flooding and left the ground saturated

An average of 200 mm (8 in) of rain fell within 36 hours in parts of the Emilia-Romagna region between Monday May 15 and Wednesday May 17. 500 mm (20 in) of rain fell within 36 hours in Forlì, Cesena, and Ravenna. This is equivalent to around half the average annual rainfall total for this region

The rainfall mostly subsided by mid-afternoon on Wednesday May 17, however the heavy rainfall resulted in high river discharge levels; at least 24 rivers and tributaries are thought to have overtopped their banks

At least 3,000 homes were flooded in Ravenna Province, according to local media reports. Recovery and rescue efforts are ongoing, and the full extent of the damage is expected to emerge in the coming weeks. A preliminary impact report split by province can be found below

Around 36,000 people were evacuated and thousands of rescues have been carried out by emergency services
