At 18:32 UTC on Monday April 22 (02:32 local time on Tuesday April 23), an earthquake of moment magnitude Mw6.0 struck 8 mi (13 km) south of Hualien City, at a depth of 6.2 mi (10 km), according to the USGS
The earthquakes were felt widely across Hualien County and Taipei, although only minor damage has been reported at this time.
“For the people of Hualien City, Taiwan, the on-going aftershock sequence is likely very un-nerving, but it is expected and a normal occurrence. Aftershock sequences last weeks to months for moderate events, but with larger events they can last a year or more. The magnitudes and frequency of the aftershocks will decrease over time. At this point, it is difficult to know when the aftershock sequence will wind down.”
